Piagol valley and autumn foliage

4km down along the hiking path from Yeongoksa, a lush valley of virgin forest begins and continues past Banyabong, Imgeollyeong, and Bulmujang. This is the Piagol valley. It was famous as a base for operations for Communist partisans in modern times. Settlers here farmed millet (pi in Korean), and naturally the location came to be called pi-bat-gol (Millet field valley), the pronunciation of which changed slowly over the years to Piagol. Said to be one of the most beautiful valleys in Jirisan, the valley is rich in water resources and is frequented by vacationers wanting to escape the heat of summer.

Between Yeongoksa and Jikjeon Village, and from Jikjeon Village to the Piagol Mountain cabin, summer vacationers can cool off in the plentiful flowing water. Piagol boasts a different kind of beauty each season, with azaleas in the spring, lush green vegetation in the summers, beautiful autumn foliage in the fall and snowy landscapes in the winters. Of these, the autumn foliage is known to be one of the 10 most beautiful sights to see in Jirisan. Piagol's autumn landscape is famous for 'Samhong (literally, the three reds, referring to the vibrant red foliage, the red-tinted waters, and the red in the eye of the beholder. The 1km segment from Pyogomakteo to Sanhongso is known to have the most beautiful autumn leaves. A bus leaves its terminus at Jikjeon village and shuttles the 3km distance to the Piagol shelter, and a visit to the valley takes about 3 hours. The Piagol - Nogodan hiking course (Yeongoksa - Imgeollyeong - Nogodan) is approximately 12km long, and boasts incredible natural beauty with numerous waterfalls and virgin forest. Each year in October, the Jirisan Piagol Autumn Foliage Festival is held; various performances and events make the visit even more enjoyable.
