Seomjingang and Cherry Blossom Path

The source of the Seomjingang is located at the Demi Spring, in Baekun-myeon of Jinan County, Jeollanam-do, between the eastern foothills of the Noryeong mountain range and the western foothills of the Sobaek mountain range. The Seomjingang has many nicknames that refer to the fine sands it is famous for. In 1385, the 11th year of the reign of King Wu of Goryo, when the Japanese invaded the Seomjingang basin, it is said that hundreds of thousands of toads began to cry at once, forcing the Japanese invaders to detour toward Gwangyang. It is said the river began being called the Seomjingang for this reason, as 'seom' is the sound of the Chinese character for toad. Alongside the only unpolluted river of South Korea's 5 major rivers is the 3km-long cherry blossom path for which Gurye is famous for. The path was created in 1992, and drivers along national highways numbers 17 and 19 can enjoy the scent of spring while driving along. Few cars pass by, making the path ideal for strolling. The path is also a popular marathon course. The Seomjingang cherry blossom path was selected by Korea's Ministry of Land, Transportation and Maritime Affairs as one of 'Korea's 100 Most Beautiful Roads.' The water of the Seomjingang are home to some 30 species of freshwater fish, including the shiny silver sweetfish and the Chinese mitten crab. Restaurants along the Seomjingangbank serve raw and grilled sweetfish, and maeuntang (spicy fish hotpot) infused with the rich flavors of the Chinese mitten crab magically revitalizes the tired traveler.
